Teaching – Seven Uniquenesses of the Teaching Profession

No One Can Do What You Do?

Who can do what you do? The reason a shortage exists in the field of teaching is simply because few can do what you do. The teaching profession is profoundly unique. In some areas of the country, a shortage is impacted by economics; other places are effected by geography and weather. For the most part, metropolitan cities have fewer issues in recruiting teachers than smaller, less populous locations. Nonetheless, the field of teaching is unique and shortages prove that few have the calling and desire to do what more than 3.1 million public and private educators are already doing. Let's look at some of the reasons teaching is unique and why shortages are common across the country, specifically in specialized subject areas such as science, math, and special education.

There are seven ways in which teachers / educators are unique professionals:

First, we've already established the fact that teachers embrace the field of education as a calling not as a job. Let's face it, teaching is a very complex and demanding career that requires teachers to be managers of people, analyzers of data, and researchers of best practices and instructional methodologies-and these skills are utilized each day. In any other major profession that required the same unique qualifications, teachers would make significantly more money. Undoubtedly, the salaries for teachers must be reexamined and adjusted to reflect the uniqueness of the profession and provide balanced scales for all teachers, whether they work in a big city or a small town or country hamlet.

Second, teachers are also unique because the profession is now driven by so much data. Teachers must now be statisticians and researchers, fully accountable in some form or fashion for managing data in the areas of assessment, attendance, graduation rates, discipline percentages, and gifted and special education progress. The administrative responsibilities of the teacher have definitely increased, but the resources necessary to make the management of these duties efficient are minimal. The new demand for data is needed, and critical to enhancing results, but resources are likewise needed to help teachers be effective and efficient in collecting, examining, and utilizing the data.

Third, teachers are required to be learning and behavioral specialists and to be able to apply differentiated instruction. Differentiated instruction is a newly celebrated philosophy, and a mandate for all teachers, that requires teachers to find effective teaching strategies that will meet the needs of students with different learning styles, all in the same classroom at the same time. Teachers must, then, be competent and active in enlisting the unique resources and skills necessary to meet the needs of kinesthetic, visual, and auditory learning styles. Additionally, the special challenges of addressing emotional behavioral disorders, learning disabilities, and attention deficit problems-all in the same classroom-broaden the gap between teachers and managers. Today's teachers are practitioners, researchers, and change agents; but, none of these unique skills are recognized or rewarded.

Fourth, continuing on the same theme, teachers must work with every child, despite the challenges of that child. In nearly every other profession, management is able to pick out the bad product or the poor employee so that productivity and quality can be increased. Educators do not have that same luxury. Instead, public education demands that every child be given the resources and opportunity to succeed. This includes those students who truly want to learn and will become good "products" and those students who get energized from wreaking havoc and chaos in school by fighting, dealing drugs, taking part in gang activity, or constantly disrupting classes.

Instead of weeding out the bad students, educators are required to manage all situations, to provide alternatives to parents, and to somehow effectively guide troubled students through the educational process. And teachers realize that they must do so, regardless of social and economic situations and, in some cases, the lack of positive parental guidance that might influence the behavior of the student. What becomes most frustrating is recognizing that, if these challenging students refuse the positive alternatives, they may end up dead, in jail, or in a hospital or wallowing in a continuing cycle of poverty. No one gets into teaching to celebrate such a potential loss of lives and potential. Teachers get into the business to change and enhance lives-uniquely, and one by one, as needed.

Fifth, teachers are unique because the line of accountability in education has many levels and tangents. This accountability is not necessarily a bad thing, but it has added to the complexity of teaching. In one way or another, teachers are impacted by the federal government, a state department of education, the local school district, and administration at their school. What does this mean for teachers? It means that the results of classroom practices go far beyond the classroom, students, parents, and principals. I can not name another career field that has as many accountability variables and levels as does the field of public education. As a teacher-educator, be aware that your individual results in the classroom are data and will be analyzed as data and that those results will be evaluated in ways that are unique to the field of education. Your successes or failures in the classroom, as reflected in the data, will impact your longevity in the field of education.

Sixth, educators are unique in that no other professional group manages so many people and is so responsible for individual progress. Teachers work with up to one hundred and eighty students or more each day and are required to ensure that each of those students succeeds academically. Young people, from the ages of four to twenty, are instructed, counseled, directed, nurtured, motivated, inspired, and coached by teachers-a cycle that continues until high school graduation, in best-case scenarios.

You may be surprised to know that children spend more time at school than they do awake at home and that children are influenced by more adults in school than in any other social circle. That makes the public school system the single most influential force on children-more so even than church. Teaching, then, is a unique career that is faced with high liability and tremendous responsibility-because real lives are dependent on competent and professional adults. These demands are tremendous, and very few people can meet them successfully.

Lastly, teaching is unique because it is the only profession where the federal government has mandated absolute perfection. Specifically, the No Child Left Behind Act requires that all children-that's 100 percent-reach proficiency on state level assessments. Between the lines, this legislation essentially requires teachers to provide effective and rigorous instruction, which will hopefully translate into providing the necessary skills and information sets so that students can be literate and competent. However, the mandate that all students be made to pass assessments is largely unrealistic because of unforeseen and calculable variables that prohibit the attainment of such a goal. Yes, the goal is lofty, but it is worthy. The expectation that teachers teach is warranted. At the end of the day, we all know that students must be able to think and apply their knowledge in real life. After all, primary and secondary schooling is a training ground with the ultimate goal of preparing young people to successfully navigate college, a profession, and the world of adults. But the attainment of such an idealistic goal as what is outlined in No Child Left Behind creates an all-consuming stress that has hurt and will continue to hurt the teaching profession if not taken in stride.

As this federal policy stands, I expect it to cause numerous educators to leave the profession-not one scientist or researcher would ever purport to achieve 100 percent accuracy on any research or experiment due to variables. Even 99.9 percent acknowledges the influence of some variables, even if it is only 0.1 percent. Yet, in the world of education, teachers must live with and comply to that unrealistic federal mandate or find a new line of business, which could be extremely detrimental to hundreds of districts across the country.

So, yes, teaching is unique, and it requires educators to be multi-faceted and multi-talented. It is my strong belief that very few professions demand what is required of teachers in the public sector. The demands are not necessarily bad, but they are indications of the complex nature of the teaching profession. Those who are cut out for this unique profession are called, often naturally skilled or highly and thoroughly trained, and committed to success. And, no, not everyone is cut out for a career in the most challenging occupation on the planet. It also requires an awareness of self. And, it is not for the weary. No, not everyone can do what teachers do. Join the movement – The Teachers Movement and make a difference.

Basic Palmistry Part II

Palmistry, also known as Chiromancy, is the art of telling a person's fortune by looking at the lines and bumps on a person's hand. However, since the 1920s, the art of Chiromancy has come a long way. Chirognomy is a related science in which hand shape; finger shape, fingers, nails and the texture and consistency of the flesh are examined in order to get a glimpse into the inner workings of the personality. Dermatoglyphics is the study of ridge patterns and formations found on the fingertips and palm itself to detect and diagnose inherited diseases. However here we are dealing with what I would call the "Romany Reader Basics" of the Art.

In an earlier New Age Notebook called Basic Palmistry I identified the major lines and mounts of the human hand. In this article we are going to examine other kinds of markings and characteristics that are common indicators of personality, temperament and fate.

Bubbles and Loops – Bubbles and loops that occur on life lines, heart lines and fate lines indicate significant episodes in your life or a life that is broken by many odd experiences. Strong clean lines without bubbles are always preferable if you are looking for a serene and quiet life.

Broken Lines – These usually indicate that a life will be disrupted in an upsetting manner. A broken lifeline can mean an early or tragic life. A break in the head line can mean a period of insanity or mental illness.

Crosses and cross-hatching: These marks on any mound or area of the hand often represent stressful influences, events or people. Usually the influence is a significant or important relationship. The deeper the line the more traumatic or life-defining the experience is said to be. The nature of the event is determined on which mound you find the cross or cross-hatching.

For instance, if you have a lot of cross-hatching on your Mound of Lower Mars you may encounter a lot of war or violence in your life. Crosses and cross-hatching on your Mound of Apollo can indicate troubles with career, confidence and success. On the outer edge of the hand, just below the little finger and the Mound of Mercury such marks are said to indicate how many children are in your future. If horizontal lines or cross-hatching occurs on your thumbs or fingertips it is a sure sign that you are under too much stress.

Attachment lines: These are lines that occur above the heart line and wrap from the side of the hand and extend out beneath the little finger. This is supposed to indicate the number of significant relationships or attachments you will have in your life.

Healer Stigmata: a long horizontal line that is crossed by three shorter lines indicates this. It is a symbol of natural healing abilities and usually occurs on the mound of Mercury just below the little finger.

Squares: If you find a square on your hand it means that you are a teacher or natural born leader and meant to enlighten others. The area of interest where you will excel is indicated where it is placed on a mound. For instance, a square that is found on the mound of Mercury indicates a career in teaching or education. A square found on the Mound of Venus below the thumb can indicate a nurse, doctor or healer.

Feathery light lines: These can be found all over the hand and are usually an indication of failing health. If the lines travel up from the wrist to the little finger it can indicate a chronic disease or disability.

X's: X's found anywhere in the palm usually indicate travel. If it is found on either of the Mounds of Upper or Lower Mars or on the plain of Mars it means traveling as a result of war or a military career. An X on the mound of Venus (below the thumb) means relocating for love and on the mound of Jupiter an X can mean relocating for reasons to do with career advancement.

Triangles: Triangles anywhere on the palm indicate a decent upbringing and emotional or intellectual strength. This once again depends which mound the triangle is found on. For example: a triangle found on the Mound of Venus indicates emotional strength and understanding when it comes to love. A triangle found on the mound of Saturn beneath the third finger indicates incredible physical and emotional endurance during times of trouble.

The Ring of Solomon: This is a line that circles the base of the Jupiter finger (index finger) and is found in the hands of those who are said to be psychic. It is also believed to represent royal blood or ancestry.

Stars: A star-shaped hatching of lines can mean that you will enjoy especially good fortune wherever that star is located. For instance if you have a star on your Mound of Venus, it can indicate fame. A star on your Mound of Mercury can mean success at relationships. Wherever you find a star on your hand, you are most likely to find good fortune unless it is located on the mound of Saturn beneath your third finger. In that case, it means a life of arrogance and pride without the prizes.

One of the reasons the Internet is so important in education is because of the wealth of information the Internet contains. What Is The Difference Between Recreational and Commercial Fishing?

In the early era, fishing is done primarily for food consumption but nowadays, it is practiced not only for consumption but also for fun, research work, and industrial purposes. Technological advancements had made it easy to catch fish, however, there are still many people who prefer the traditional way of catching for the purpose of relaxation.

Modern day fishing is broadly categorized into recreational and commercial fishing.

Differentiating Recreational and Commercial

Recreational fishing is also known as sports fishing. This is usually done for fun and competition purposes. Using the basic method of catching, this type of fishing differs from commercial category in many ways. Fish catching in this category is usually done in lighter boats with rods, reels, hooks and baits. Lighter boats are used so as not to make disturbance for a successful catch.

Sometimes this is also done inland with the same equipment used, usually beside a lake.

What Is The Commercial or Industrial Fishing

Commercial fishing, if done on large scale, is also called an industrial fishing. This commercial type of fishing which uses equipment such as trawlers and factory ships aims to provide seafood supply for the market. Trawlers are used for commercial purposes while factory ships are used for industrial purposes.

Generally, the trawlers are equipped with nets, trawl and pot-traps. Factory ships on the other hand are large vessels with dynamic on-board facilities for immediate processing and freezing of caught seafood. These factory ships are capable of storing tons of seafood at a time. Unlike recreational fishing, commercial fishing is a serious revenue generating career for people. But it is considered as a very dangerous career line because of its high fatality rate.

The alarming rate of marine species extinction has also been attributed to this kind of industrial fishing.

What Is The Role of Government

Several non-profit organizations continuously file petition against recreational fishing as well as commercial fishing to protect other marine forms of life. Thus some government agencies were formed to monitor excessive catching of fish that can be dangerous for the existence of several marine species. Strict rules and regulations have been imposed to control catching of fish to a reasonable extent.

Like commercial fishing, recreational fishing is also subject to the intervention of the government. Government regulations make quotas, treaties and laws to control the catching of fishes otherwise the extinction of marine species will rise at an alarming rate.

So you know what you want as well as what you don’t want.

You have gained your life wisdom – You already have the understanding of life that only comes with experiencing life with all the good as well as bad. You lived through some pains and losses and you healed the wounds. You lived through joy, wins and miracles. $200 Per Hour Opening Cars — How To Become A Lockout Specialist

If you haven’t yet locked your keys inside your car, you will someday. The odds are heavily against you, because this is one of the most common slip-ups to haunt the civilized world. Personally I’ve done it no less than ten times myself over a period of, say, twenty years…and I’m a Locksmith!

Now, how can you turn this into a benefit?

If you happen to be looking for a high profit, super interesting career you could do a lot worse than to consider becoming a Lockout Specialist. I know whereof I speak, because as a working Locksmith since 1983 I’ve opened (literally) countless vehicles and I’ve had many instances where I made upwards of $200 per hour over several hours at a time. I can recall one incredible day in which I serviced twenty-three lockouts, at an average price of $40 and an average labor time of 10 minutes per vehicle — for most of a day. This was near Christmas in 1995, in Salt Lake City, Utah. I was self-employed and doing very well as a full service Locksmith, but the bulk of my business during Holidays has always been in the form of lockouts.

It is important to make a distinction here, to avoid confusion. I am not proposing that you will make that kind of money day after day. There will be average days, and there will be busy days. But if you set up a business, in a fairly large city or base yourself at least near one, you stand to make unconscionably easy money once you get settled in and your business becomes visible. Opening locked cars is as easy a profession as ever has been conceived. It takes some skill, of course, and you will have to do some studying before you break out the lockout tools and advertise yourself — but compared to many other professions it just can’t be beat for simplicity. You will also have to do some homework with respect to legality. Some states require Lockout Specialists to be registered Locksmiths, but most do not! This is something you have to determine before you take another step.

If you find that you are living in a jurisdiction that requires registering, it is not that difficult to do. You will have to gain a wider knowledge of Locksmithing, but this certainly is not a detriment as it will likely lead to a fantastic career that goes well beyond opening locked mini-vans. If on the other hand you are fortunate enough to be living in an area in which Lockout Specialists can be licensed without having to be full-fledged Locksmiths, the path to a cushy career sprawls before you.

I started my business in Salt Lake City when I was 37 years of age. Up until then I had never so much as dreamt of being involved with locks, car openings or keys. I was in dire straights, having just lost most everything I owned through a business failure that occurred as collateral damage from a divorce. Someone suggested I go door to door and sell “door viewers” — those little peepholes people put in their front doors. This actually worked well, but only because at that time I had no bills (everything got disposed of). After a while I was being asked to install locks. I started doing that and was buying deadbolts at a local Locksmith shop one day when the guy behind the counter, who by then had gotten to know me, suggested I start a Locksmith business. I thought he was kidding me, seriously. But he told me that Locksmiths make incredible profit from most everything they do, especially doing lockouts. He sold me a few tools — which in Utah is perfectly legal (or was at that time at least) — and also a small book on opening cars.

That was a turning point in my life. I went on, within six months, to taking on small Locksmith jobs and teaching myself. I put a small ad in the Yellow Pages, hoping against hope I wouldn’t go bust in the first few months because those ads can’t be canceled, and I soon realized there was enough business out there that I was opening cars almost every day. I got better at it the more I did it (there were nightmare jobs in which it took me hours to open a single car, but that was in the very early days). Eventually the calls started coming in quite regularly and I started making good money, doing something I enjoyed. The feeling of helping others who really need your specialized service is a great one, and knowing you are working for yourself and no one else is beyond description.

I had to do all this without a road map. There was nothing available to beginners in those days, not like there is today. The explosion of information that is the Internet has made all the difference. I wish back in 1983 I’d had the advantages available to career seekers today. There are many self-help manuals and DVD courses now that can teach you to set up a Lockout Specialist business, or a full-fledged Locksmith business. The prices are surprisingly affordable, and the information in at least some of them is staggering. In many cases, you can actually earn certification by purchasing one of these courses.

It is worth considering if you like the idea of working for ten minutes, assisting a motorist in need, and putting up to $50 or $60 dollars in your pocket for your trouble.

High School Wrestling: My 10 Favorite Moves

I never used throws in my wrestling career. Throws just weren’t my thing. High amplitude throws look cool and can score a wrestler 5 points quickly and maybe even result in a pin. But, throws are also high risk moves. Throws are high-risk, high-reward moves. Investing in commodities is also a high-risk, high-reward endeavor. I’d rather put my money into a savings account or a CD with an assured rate of return on my investment.

Similarly, in the sport of wrestling I’d rather put my practice time to use on drilling double legs, single legs, and stand-ups. In the sport of football, you see a lot of hand-offs and short passes. You don’t often see trick plays or really long passes (i.e. the bomb). Often a team will kick a field goal instead of trying for the touchdown because the field goal is more of a sure thing. I think you see what I’m getting at. It’s good to learn throws and counters to throws. However, usually the fundamentals win wrestling matches. This is probably a message you have heard before. Ninety percent of the time, you will probably use the same moves. You may use a different version of the move or set it up differently, but use the same basic move nonetheless.

I had a teammate in junior high who liked to headlock everyone he wrestled. That worked in junior high, but it stopped working in high school. If you’re good at throws then go for it. But, most NCAA champions and freestyle Olympic champions are not throwers. Watch a video of John Smith or Tom Brands and see how often they do a throw. I don’t think I’ve ever seen either wrestler do a throw in competition.

Most of the following moves can easily be found online or in books. Several are featured in online videos. I’m sure you know all of these moves. They are basic moves. But, fundamental moves win matches which is why everyone uses them. The key is to find the proper techniques for applying these moves. Remember the importance of setting your moves up and not just wildly shooting takedowns. Be aware of your position at all times. Don’t try to emulate other wrestlers or do moves just because your coach thinks they are good. Find out what works for you. Take the time to learn your craft (i.e. wrestling). Don’t be lured in by fancy moves or instant gratification. Practice and drill fundamental moves religiously. Don’t spend time in practice or in competition performing moves that are only likely to work two percent of the time. Now then, here are my ten favorite moves.

1. Double leg takedown

The double leg is one of the first moves I learned. The double leg is one of the first moves most wrestlers learn. The sport of judo has a similar technique known as morote- gari (two-handed reap or double leg grab). What could be more basic than tackling someone by grabbing both of his legs? Kids probably do it all of the time. Of course, it’s a bit more difficult than that. Proper technique is required. You don’t want to get overextended. You opponent could snap you down and spin around or put you in a front headlock. Therefore, make sure that you take a deep penetration step while keeping your hips under you. Some wrestlers like to drive through their opponents and some like to lift their opponent off the ground to finish the double leg. In junior high we were always told, “On a double leg you keep your head on the outside. On a single leg you keep your head on the inside.” Sometimes you can lock your hands while doing a double leg and then use your head as a pry to take your opponent down. I had a high school teammate who used the double leg takedown 99% of the time when he was on his feet. He placed third in the state tournament during his senior year. Sometimes you can get away with doing the same move repeatedly when you’re really good at it. You can often switch off to a double leg after performing a high crotch. The double leg is a fairly low-risk move. If you don’t finish it, you often simply end up back on your feet again. Former UFC champion Matt Hughes executed double legs in matches often and slammed his opponents to the canvas. Mixed martial artists often learn how to perform a double leg. Of course, you can’t slam your opponent in folkstyle wrestling. But, the double leg takedown is a great move. The double leg is a high percentage move (i.e. it often works).

2. Single leg takedown

The single leg is another basic takedown. I used primarily single leg takedowns in high school. There are numerous ways to set up and finish a single leg. The single leg is also a high percentage move. Push and pull your opponent causing him to bring the leg you want to attack forward. Make him “heavy” on the foot you want to attack. Lower your level and shoot in with your hips under you as a strong foundation. Keep your head inside and get an angle off to his side. Or, don’t tie up and simply make sure you are close enough to perform your shot without getting overextended. I think it’s fairly easy to shoot a single leg. I think the real secret is being able to finish it. You may have to pivot around and grab his far ankle. You may have to get his ankle on your knee to help you lift his leg. You may have to tripod up and then do a “boot scoot.” Spend a lot of time working on your ties, set-ups, and finishes for single legs and other takedowns.

3. High crotch takedown

The high crotch is a kind of single leg. It’s also similar to a duck under. You can set up a high crotch from an underhook, a two-on-one tie, or many other ways. I like to hit a high crotch and then finish it by switching off to a double leg.

4. Whizzer

If someone shoots for a takedown, you can sprawl, whizzer, and crossface him. I consider a whizzer to be a basic and effective move for countering leg attacks. The whizzer involves a deep overhook on your opponent’s near arm when he is in deep on a takedown attempt. The pressure of a whizzer on your opponent’s arm is often enough to fend off his attack. Sometimes in a whizzer situation, you can wrap your free hand around his neck and drive him to the mat in a half nelson. Other times you end up on your feet with the whizzer still secure and you can try to hip toss your opponent. The whizzer is an important move and should be drilled often.

5. Stand-up

This is the most standard move for escaping from the bottom position. Keep your elbows in, explosively stand up, break your opponent’s grip, and turn to face him. Hand and wrist control is important. You’ll have to be good at hand fighting. After you break his grip, you can try to take his captured hand and place it in your “back pocket” before you turn quickly to face him. Stand-ups are great for getting that 1-point escape. Make sure that you aggressively seek a takedown immediately after getting the escape.

6. Switch

I love the switch. The switch is the most fundamental reversal technique in wrestling. It involves a hip heist type movement. Sometimes it helps to push back into your opponent before you pivot and scoot your hips out to hit the switch. I really enjoyed doing the “standing switch” in high school. I would stand up from the bottom position. When he pulled me back to the mat, I would immediately hit a switch. You should know how to do a standing switch.

7. Sit-out

This is another fundamental move from the bottom position. After you achieve the sit-out position, you can often execute a hip heist and escape. In addition, if your opponent sticks his head over your shoulder, you can grab it, rotate hard in the opposite direction, and put him on his back. The sit-out is fundamental and you should know how to perform it.

8. Cross-body leg ride

The cross-body ride is performed from the top position and involves putting one or both of your legs inside of your opponent’s legs. We used to call it the “cowboy ride” if a wrestler put both of his legs in. I liked using a cross-body ride when I was having trouble keeping my opponent down in the bottom position. I used to do turks and guillotines from the cross-body position. Sometimes I merely used the ride to break opponents down. I was once ridden for an entire period by an opponent who put both legs in and used a force half nelson. That was not fun. The cross-body can be higher-risk. You have to keep your back arched and not let yourself get too far forward on your opponent’s back. Nonetheless, I think it’s an effective move. Olympic champion Ben Peterson was good at leg riding.

9. Arm bar (a.k.a. the chicken wing)

The arm bar was my favorite pinning move. I used single and double arm bars often. I liked to secure a single arm bar and then swing my leg over my opponent’s head and use it as a pry. This usually got my opponent to turn over to his back. Dan Gable was exceptional at arm bars.

10. Front quarter nelson

The front quarter nelson is a great move after you have sprawled and stopped an opponent’s shot. You place one hand on the back of his head while threading your other hand behind his near arm. You then place the hand you’ve threaded behind his near arm on top of the hand on the back of his head. You apply pressure, elevate his near arm, and force his head to the mat. You can often turn him onto his back in this manner. I used to apply a front quarter nelson, get my opponent moving one direction, and then arm drag or shuck him as I spun around behind for the takedown.

Other Favorite Moves
